Buying a Phone Case as a Gift? Check These Things First
4 min read
In this story
A phone case is a good little gift when you know two things: the exact phone it needs to fit, and what the person actually likes. Get those right and you've chosen something they can use every day.
The tempting part is choosing the design first. You see a flower that reminds you of your sister and suddenly you're at checkout. Give the boring detail a minute before you do that. The nicest case in the world is an awkward gift if the camera opening doesn't line up.
Get the full phone model name
Knowing that someone has an iPhone isn't enough. Keep the entire model name, including words such as Plus, Pro, or Pro Max when they appear. Those words matter when you're selecting a case.
If they can check their phone, ask them to open Settings, then General, then About, and read the Model Name. Our phone model guide walks through the check. Read Model Name rather than Name, which may be a nickname they've given their phone. Copy the full model name and match it against the product's model selector.
Trying to keep the gift a surprise? Ask someone who already knows, or ask the recipient directly and keep the design secret. Guessing from a mirror selfie is a lot of effort for an answer you still can't be sure about. It's also worth finding out whether they're about to replace their phone.

Borrow a clue from something they already own
Look at the case they're using now. If it's a bright pattern, you have a useful starting point. If it's plain, that could mean they like simple things, or just that it was the first case they found. Check another clue before deciding.
Their favorite bag is a good one. So are the colors they wear again and again. Someone who keeps choosing soft greens probably doesn't need a neon pink case just because you think it would be fun. Unless, of course, they've specifically told you they want a neon pink case.
You don't have to buy something identical to what they have. Aim for one familiar detail. A color they love gives you room to try a different pattern without making the gift feel like an experiment on their taste.
Choose the photo together if you need to
A photo case can be lovely for someone who likes keeping personal pictures close. Start with a photo they'd want other people to see. An image you find hilarious and an image they want on their phone may be two very different files.
For a pet photo, look for a clear face and some space around the ears. For a picture of the two of you, pick one you both like. You can ask them to choose the photo and still take care of the rest of the gift.
Custom products need a little extra attention before ordering. Check the product's image instructions and read the current return policy. Don't assume a personalized item has the same change-of-mind options as another purchase.
Think about how they use their phone
Does their phone spend all day on a charging stand? Do they carry a magnetic wallet or use a mount in the car? Those habits are worth knowing before you choose. Check the individual case's stated compatibility with what they use.
A design name tells you about the look. It doesn't answer every question about materials, charging, or protection. If a detail matters to the person receiving the gift and you can't find it on the page, ask us about that case and phone model.
Leave yourself time for the part after ordering
Check the product page and shipping policy before planning around a birthday. Dispatch time is when a parcel leaves; delivery is when it arrives. Read the estimate that applies to the product and destination you're ordering for.
Once you've checked the model and timing, you can enjoy choosing the design. Have a look through Case Poppy phone cases with that person in mind. A small note saying why the pattern reminded you of them can make the gift feel a lot more personal.
